Once again, nursing homes are failing to protect our seniors. A new report from a U.S. government watchdog confirms that many nursing homes ignore mandatory reporting requirements. The result – resident harm without accountability.
RESIDENT HARM AND ABUSE
The report documented:
- 42,864 Medicare-enrolled nursing home residents suffered a fall resulting in major injury and hospitalization.
- 1,911 of those residents died during hospitalized.
- Despite mandatory reporting requirements, 43% of these falls were not reported.

PROFITS OVER PEOPLE
Understaffing leads to preventable harm. Falls, injuries, and abuse in nursing homes have one common thread – low staffing levels. Understaffing causes harm and abuse. The fix is simple – hire, train and fairly pay the people who care for our seniors.
Lower reporting of resident harm artificially boosts a facilities “quality scores”. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) rates nursing homes based on data. Such failures to report, deprive the public of accurate information they need and deserve to know.
RECOMMENDATIONS
- First, require full and accurate reporting of all resident harm events.
- Next, leverage fall data to strengthen and validate overall nursing home quality scores.
CMS has endorsed with these recommendations.
