Too Many Nursing Homes Are Receiving Failing Grades
Why Do So Many Nursing Homes Rate So Poorly
New York State has over 600 nursing homes. All industries and businesses require regulation and oversight. Due to their special status of protectors of our senior citizens and those vulnerable members of society, they too require a watchful eye.
The federal government and each state aim to improve and enhance care provided to consumers with valuable information when selecting a nursing home. Annually, The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) conducts audits and rates nursing homes. Part of this process includes looking at staffing levels, resident safety concerns, and quality of care provided.
New York Nursing Home Ranking Released
We find it appalling that over 150 of them received the lowest possible grade. Why so many?
Put another way, only 106 nursing homes received the highest ranking. Why so few?
In fact, the appalling and alarming trend has shown that since 2019 there has been a near 40% increase in the number of nursing homes that received the lowest possible rating (1 out of 5 stars). Why is the allowed to occur?
Unfortunately, we do not have answers to these questions. We can only speculate. Is it due to the vast sums of money that the owners and operators of these facilities have? What role do political contributions play? Is it due to the gossamer of corporations that are set up to “hide” and camouflage ownership? How much is due to the lack of oversight by the federal and state government?
What we can state with certainty is that our senior citizens and the vulnerable members of our society are the unfortunate victims of the failures of the nursing home owners and operators.
